The Mission: The Spirit's Power
When Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, He sent them as the Father had sent Him and then breathed His Holy Spirit upon them. For us to go on mission empowered by the Holy Spirit, we must also understand how the Father sent the Son, because this is the same way the Son sends us: with His pleasure, His purpose, His people, and His presence.
To be sent with the pleasure of the Father is to know that God’s love and approval precede our successes or failures in the mission field. We are called to make disciples of every nation; to fulfill this purpose, we need the Holy Spirit to help us remain focused. The mission of God is fundamentally relational. There is greater power in going on mission together, hence the need to embrace God-given relationships.
Lastly, we are sent with His presence. Jesus promises to be with us until the end of the age. We attempt great things not because we are great, but because of the greatness of the One who dwells within us.
